47. Narrative Text
Narrative is a text focusing on specific participants. It is social function is to tell stories or past events and entertain the readers or listeners. The generic structure of narrative is :
A narrative text consist of the following structure :
a. Orientation : introducing the participants andinforming the time and the place.
b. Complication : Describing the rising crisses which the participants have to do with.
c. Resolution : Showing the way of participants to solve the crises, for better or worse.
The language features are :
a. Focus on specific and individualized participants
b. The use of action verbs
c. The use of temporal conjunctions
d. The example of narrative text as follows.
Stories are formed by elements that will make them more interesting to read and make the readers come into the deep feeing of the characters, here are the elements of stories.
1. Character
The importances of character
a. It needs to identify
b. It brings own life experience to the story
Identifying character :
a. Physical description
b. Character thoughts, feelings, words.
c. Comments and reactions of other characters
d. Actions of the characters and author’s stated opinion.
2. Setting
Setting of the short story has definite impact on characters development and plot the climax is approached.
3. Plot
Systematic chain of events which make up the short story. The main character is presented with situation which presents a problem or conflict which he must resolve. The events leading up to the resolution or climax of the story is commonly referred to as the rising action.
4. Types of conflict
External :
a. Man vs man
b. Man vs nature
c. Man vs other
Internal :
Man vs self
5. Point of view
It is critical to be able to see things from another’s point of view :
a. Omniscient
Narrator knows all-thougt, feeling. Ideas.
b. Detached observer-narrator can describe characters and what they are doing, but not their thoughts and feeling.
6. Theme
The controlling idea or belief as to what is important or unimportant in life. It gives the basic meaning to a literary work.
